Managing Up

The RIGHT behaviors get you the RIGHT results. The wrong behaviors get you absolutely nowhere.

Some people just seem to know what to say and do to garner admiration, attention and more importantly rewards from their management. Do you think they were just born that smart? I don’t! I think along the way they received some help. Why shouldn’t you get an extra edge too? Your management manages you, shouldn't you manage them too? I am not talking about sucking up or being manipulative. I am talking about positive behaviors that make your management glad that you are on the job.

Why don’t you give yourself an edge?

I bet you see people around you who frankly are not as good at their jobs as you are at yours, but somehow they seem to be getting better assignments, have more comfortable relationships with your boss and other influencers and have more freedom in how they do their jobs.

I can tell you that there are at least SEVEN behaviors that they exhibit that you either do not exhibit or you do not exhibit consistently. Things like:

  • Putting OTHERS first
  • Communicating APPROPRIATELY
  • Setting the RIGHT priorities

Let me teach you these and all of the SEVEN behaviors you need so that YOU are the one who:

  • The INFLUENCERS see as on the way up
  • Is TRUSTED with key assignments
  • Reaps the BENEFITS of a good working relationship with your management

"The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people.” – Theodore Roosevelt

‘Managing Up’ teaches you all SEVEN required behaviors, why they are important and how you can adopt these behaviors. You will receive this information in writing (the ‘Managing Up’ eBook) and as a recording (the ‘Managing Up’ coachinar hosted by yours truly.)

"It is literally true that you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed." - Napoleon Hill

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I make life easier for the people around me?
  • Would my boss say I am high maintenance?

If you want to be the one who successfully manages up, you MUST learn that managing up is not wrapping your boss around your little finger. It is not manipulation. (Sure some people behave this way, but this is never what I want for you.) It is about BEING the respected, reliable and EXCELLENT resource that you are and behaving so that others RECOGNIZE your VALUE.

Once upon a time I interviewed a candidate for a job. He actually asked me this question; “If I worked for you, how could I make your life easier?” Now the first time I heard that I was completely floored. And I admit I was a little cynical and I thought, “Yes, sure buddy.” I had no response (shame on me).

Then it happened again with a different candidate. This time I was prepared. I told him, “Come in, get ramped-up as quickly as possible, ask for direction and then take that direction and run with it. Build good relationships with your customers and your team and don’t ever let me get blind-sided.”

You report to a person, a human being. Whether they choose to let you see that side of them or not, that's a style issue. They have pressures, stresses, fears, and insecurities just like you do. So don’t think for a minute that just because someone has director or a vice-president in their title that they have no worries. How are you treating your boss?

Now ask yourself this question:

  • Do I know how to make life easier for my boss?

If the answer is NO, you need ‘Managing Up’.

Consider the story of Jasper and Richie (real names withheld of course)

They both work for the same chief information officer or CIO and the perception is Jasper is on his way up. In fact Jasper’s boss looks forward to giving Jasper more responsibility. The CIO has this thought about Ritchie, “I think Ritchie is already in over his head and I’m certainly not going to demote him, but he’s just not a candidate for additional responsibility or for future promotion.” OUCH!

Well, part of this is about perception. Whether you like it or not, perception becomes reality.

I bet you know people who are masters at managing perception. The problem is some of those people are ‘perception’ only. Perhaps you call them all fluff and no form or all style and no substance.

‘Managing Up’ is not about the fluff. YOU have the substance behind the style you just need to show it. You are going to put into action the behaviors that will HAVE OTHERS SAYING:

  • What would we ever do without _______?
  • How does __________ stay on top of everything?
  • How come ___________ knows exactly how to handle our boss?
  • ________ is really well regarded by our customers, leaders and team members.
  • How does __________ know just what to do to make the boss happy?

See all those fill-in-the-blanks above? That is where you fill in your name, because if you really put ‘Managing Up’ to good use, this will be YOU.

‘Managing Up’ is not just a nicety, it is a necessity.

Remember be mindful and thoughtful. How you act and what you produce on the job impacts your management and your co-workers too.

Have you ever:

  • Wondered what your boss really wants from you?
  • Wondered why someone who is less skilled than you are is held in higher regard?
  • Wondered why you work hard, yet your boss seems unimpressed?
  • Wondered how you can relax and be at ease with your management and them with you?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, ‘Managing Up’ will give you MORE than just answers, it will give you answers and actions. The next step is up to you.

“The greatest ability in business is to get along with others and to influence their actions.” – John Hancock

Forget about manipulation and brown-nosing, ‘Managing Up’ is the primer for getting along with your management by controlling the only thing you truly can control, YOURSELF! You will receive this information in writing (the ‘Managing Up’ eBook) and as a recording (the ‘Managing Up’ coachinar hosted by yours truly.)
