“Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”
Of course people are not surprised when YOU do the right thing. More often than not you are the person who does the right thing. How do I know this? You are reading this message. You are voluntarily receiving notes and articles about handing conflict at work and about compassion in the workplace and about building your strength of character.
Still the above quote by Mark Twain is worth sharing. It conveys an important message and manages to sneak in a little bit of humor. When Mr. Twain says “…This will gratify some people…” I think the most important person it gratifies is YOU. When YOU know that you did the right thing you can have a clear conscience. I cannot promise you that each time you do the right thing everyone walks away happy; but you walk away knowing that you were true to who you are and what you represent. Ultimately the fact that your actions clearly represent who you really are will be gratifying to others too. After all they will know who you are as a professional and as a person.
It isn’t always easy to do the right thing, but it sure beats the regret that comes from doing the wrong thing!
