How Did I Get Here? (Random thoughts on project management)

From starting out as an accidental project manager to leading with compassion. Kate Kurzawska of timecamp helps me take a stroll down memory lane as we discuss how I became a project manager. In this candid interview, Kate encouraged me to discuss one of my biggest disappointments in the workplace, my inspirations and how to set personal and professional priorities.

I hope you enjoy listening to this podcast discussion as much as I enjoyed recording it.

An Exciting Announcement from Margaret Meloni!

pmstudent-logo-270x80Our community is growing! I have such good news. The pmStudent community is now part of our community too. pmStudent was created by Josh Nankivel. Josh has been (and continues to be) passionate about project management. He has created some excellent resources for all of us.

For example WBSCoach: http://wbscoach.com/ and a large selection of other really terrific project management courses, http://learn.pmstudent.com/. I consider it quite a privilege to have been able to collaborate with Josh on some past projects.

On January 1st, Josh contacted me and advised me that he was transitioning to a new opportunity and no longer had the bandwidth to continue with pmStudent. He wondered if I knew of someone who would be interested? Oh boy – did I know someone who was interested! I felt like a little child in a classroom, raising my hand and jumping up and down and saying, “Oh, oh Teacher pick me, PICK ME!”

You can see Josh and I discussing this exciting news here: http://pmstudent.com/new-doors-are-opening/

I am so honored that he did pick me to continue on with pmStudent. He has built something so special and so important. Now together you and I will carry this forward.

Here are some ways to begin:

Watch some truly helpful videos on the pmStudent YouTube channel:

Sample PMP Application

Over one year ago, I helped a client with the application for the PMP (project management professional exam). This is not a big part of coaching, but it falls under being generally helpful and encouraging someone to move forward.

I took the application and marked it up with some possible examples and some comments to help explain the requirements of the application. I had no idea that this would be valuable to others.

What I have learned over the past few months is that having a sample; even a sample as rough as the draft I created is very helpful. I learned this through my networking on ITtoolbox (www.ITtoolbox.com). ITtoolbox is an online professional networking site for people in Information Technology. I participate in some discussion groups with IT project managers.

I offered up the draft and was amazed at the response. Every once in a while I get a flurry of requests for the sample. I am always pleased to provide the sample. I now realize it will make it easier for others to include on my site.

Please enter your name and email address and the link to access the sample PMP exam application will be sent to your inbox.
