I am not talking about a situation where someone is asking you to do something really inappropriate. I am talking about those situations where someone asks you to do something that you have never done before. It might even be something you have been considering or planning, but you just weren’t ready yet. And then someone comes along and they push you. They look right at you and they expect you to do this thing.
How could they? Oh, right – they see you as capable. Whatever it is that you have been putting off:
- Public speaking
- Writing articles
- Writing a book
- Leading a complex project
- Leading a seminar
- Applying for that promotion
This pushy outrageous person who is asking you to do this thing that you are absolutely not ready to do – they are asking because they already know you can do it. Why would anyone ask you to be a speaker at their event if they could not already envision you in that role? You know better don’t you? Nobody is going to ask you to participate with them in a project or endeavor if they think you can’t do the work.
You just have not caught up to your own ability yet. You are already capable of taking on this new task and so much more. When someone comes along and naturally assumes that you can be their keynote speaker or write that book or qualify for that promotion that is your opportunity to leap forward. Your whole mental state about not being ready yet, may really be rooted in fear. Fear of failure or fear of success. For some reason you are holding yourself back. Now you have this person who is unknowingly inviting you to conquer your fear and step forward. What a wonderful assist. Don’t let this opportunity pass you by, without this nudge, who knows when you will really feel ready?
So next time someone comes to you and asks you to do that thing, whatever it is that you want to do and you plan to do, but you just are not ready yet. Don’t say no, don’t say thanks but I don’t do that or I am not ready, say YES AND THANKS FOR THE NUDGE!
